Dos Papas opens in Creekside Mall

June 25, 2019: With two new Mexican restaurants recently opened in Hoggetowne recently amounting to 22 Tex-Mex lunch stops and a lot of beans, rice, and taco chips. The GLOB Master is wondering when Gainesville's Lunch Out Blog will be publishing this website in multiple languages. CARUMBA GLOBers you can add two more pinto bean, oxaca cheese, guacamole lunch spots to your noonday meal rotation:


Dos Papas Tequila & Taqueria Opens in Creekside Mall

What is fast becoming Gainesville's ultimate restaurant graveyard has a new restaurant in Dos Papas Tequila & Taqueria on SW 3501 SW 2nd Ave. The Dos Papas manager was very clear stating Dos Papas is an authentic Mexican restaurant featuring molcajetes, Sopas, chicharones, and Mexican St. corn along with the standard burritos – five ways, tacos – eight ways, and quesadillas. There is Avocado Toast with House made guacamole, fresh tomatoes over toast with a chile oil drizzle on the menu that has caught the GLOB Master's attention. Open everyday Dos Papas features a Taco Tuesday with $2.50 tacos, a Margarita Monday serving $4.50 margaritas all day lone, happy hour daily from 4 – 7:00. Las Maracas Mexican Restaurant Opens on NW 34th St.

Gainesville's second new Mexican lunch stop is located in the old Gator Tales building on NW 34th St. at 5112 NW 34th Blvd. The Las Maracas menu includes fajitas, flautas, burritos, steak, pork, nachos, tacos and Mexican seafood dishes. The Las Maracas' el molcajete is a popular entrée which is shredded chicken, steak, shrimp, pork, chorizo and bacon, served with grilled cactus in a hot lava rock bowl. Open every day at 11 a.m. The Mexican lunch stop serves seven vegetarian dinners, hot chicken wings and has a kids' menu.



Indian Buffet lunch stop opens in Midtown

Tikka Express, 1011 W. University, has opened in the former Gyro Plus spot offering Indian favorites in the familiar Buffet format open from 11:00 – 6:00. Offering Indian favorites like chicken and shrimp curry, chicken Tikka masala, Chicken Chili, Tandoori Shrimp, ten Vegetarian entrees, eight Lamb and Goat entrees are among more than 70 menu items. Tikka Express is open everyday at 11:00.



'Unique' Asian Buffet opens on SW 34th St.

Nine Spices Fondue, 3333 SW 34th St.. Nine Spices Fondue (Hot Pot)'s provides a variety of soup base and ingredients choices for a unique fondue dining experience on a sliding buffet table that rotates through the dining customers. The Asian menu has a variety of soup bases including herbal, tomato, bone soup, and sour pickles. There are five Hoyt Pot Combos including veggie, seafood, and lamb Hot Pots. With 11 meat options, eight seafood options, and 29 vegetable options Nine Spices Fondue has your fondue lunch covered. Sodas, milk tea, coconut mile, and various teas are available as well as liquor and beer. There is an 'All You Can Eat' feature with a 2 hour limit. Open seven days at 11:30 Nine Spices is located in the University Town Center near Earth Fare grocery.




Fast Casual Salad Bar opens in Mid-town

May 7, 2019JUST SALAD fast casual salad bar has opened to fill the vacancy of the now closed Grill Fresh due to urban development. With a home page teaser teaser touting: HOME OF THE REUSABLE BOWL, THE FASTEST SERVICE IN TOWN, and 10 ITEMS UNDER $10 Just salads now open next door to next door to the Taco bell across from the UF Campus has your salad bar covered with 11 custom salads including the Seared Ahi Tuna, and the Tokyo Supergreens with Grilled Chicken, Supergreens Blend, Grilled Chicken, Carrot Edamame Slaw, Avocado, Broccoli, Roasted Almonds, Furikake Shake. There is also a Build Your Own menus of 'Essentials' including veggies, fruits, grains and crunch.

A Just Salad unique lunch item is the TOAST BOXES of avocado, toast, Feta, Roasted Pumpkin Seeds, Charred Corn, Pickled Red Onions, Smoky Poblano Ranch dressing. A list of bowl and wraps are available with six choices that include one base ingredients, two sides, or veggies and one protein with an interesting sounding FORGER's WARM BOWL of Organic Sesame Tofu, Sauteed Kale Salad, Roasted Balsamic Mushrooms, Quinoa & Farro, Grape Tomatoes, Goat Cheese. You can top your lunch off with 16 dressing choices including Kale Pesto Vinaigrette, and Spicy Turmeric Tahini.

Billy Bobz reopens on NW 23rd Ave.

Billy-Bobz Bar-B-Q returns to the Gainesville burnt protein scene one on near Wards Grocery, 501 NW 23rd Ave. Serving breakfast starting at 7:00 the BBQ stand serves lunch and dinner until 9:00 at night. Lunch specials, brisket, pork and chicken, sandwiches, and platters Billy-Bobs sides return with the favorite include hand-cut French fries, mac and cheese and baked beans, and collard greens.



Hooters tries again on SW 34th St.

The GLOB Master has fond memories of the Hooters Franchise when it was located in the Dragonfly building downtown. They ventured out to SW 34th st. to never really make it as a destination kind of lunch stop. They are giving it another with new management ans the same old Hooters favorites of chicken wings, burgers, tacos, sandwiches and a very customer friendly staff of servers. Opening at 11:00 every day Hooters runs late into the night with closing from 12-2:00.



Darby's Opens on S. Main St

March 6, 2019 - Darby's Eatery & Desserts home cooking, old fashioned sandwiches including a fish sandwich and a Darby Burger. Salads, wings, barbeque and the Soul Food FridayHave opened on S. Main St. Highlighting a menu of this six days a wwk breakfast and lunch stop featuring stuffed pork chops, Ox Tails Bowls, chitterling Bowls, Turkey wings Bowl, Chicken Gizzards, ribs, and honey baked ham this is a good 'ol Southern boy's lunch top dream. Cilantro Tacos opens in the Town of Tioga Plaza

With a menu including tacos, burritos, quesadilla Cilantro Tacos also includes a burrito bowl, taco salads and a kids meal. With a standar Tex=Mex fare Cilantros also includes Burriot Boews, Barbacoa, Lenguna, and Carnitas.  The popular Mexican lunch stops prides themselves on Tex-Mex tacos they created while living in Southern California before relocating to Florida. According to the Cilantro's website: "We are originally from Southern California and brought our love for Mexican food to the wonderful community of Newberry in 2013. Hurricane BT&W opens second location

After opening their first Hurricane Burrito, Tacos & Wings in the old Burrito Brother Midtown location BTW has opened a new lunch spot near SFC college on the corner of NW 39th ave and NW 83rd St. Guacamole Burger, Korean BBQ Beef tacos, and Coco Chicken Wings adorn this menu with several specials and an awesome late night burger special "BTW is big in Palm Beach," said BTW owner Jack Gandolfo. "My wife and I just bought property outside of Ocala and this is our new home," He added. With 10 chicken wing sauces, and seven taco choices you might think hamburgers take a back seat until you talk to Jack G. "I know there are a lot of good burgers in Gainesville," Gandolfo said. "I want to hear what you think of our premium double cheese burger with bacon, and Guacamole," the Hurricane BTW owner said.



Four new lunch stops and a secret, hidden gem of a Pho shop that was sequestered from the GLOB Master has sprouted over the Winter holidays. That means I am more than a little excited about checking out the three new Asian lunch stops and I am looking forward to experiencing the Big Dick Special!

Dick Mondell's opens near SW 4th. apts.

January 14, 2019: Dick's Mondell's Burgers and Fries recently opened on SW 4th Ave. in the slowly developing 4th Ave. Food Park area near the 2nd Avenue Centre apartments. With the featured entrée titled The Original Big Dick hamburger this walk-up, drive thru window lunch stop is a name dropping treat from their meatless Impossible Burger, to Joyce Farms humanely raised and antibiotic free chicken. Continuing a contemporary, environmentally correct approach to lunch DMBF also features Wainwright Dairy ice cream and milkshakes Joyce Farms Chicken Burgers, Deep River Kettle cooked potato chips, sweet potato tots, natural cut fries, and garden and grain salads and Opus Dark Star coffee. NOTE TO DICK: Open daily at 11:00 this lunch stop would be the PERFECT drive thru early morning breakfast drive thru . . .:)




Mother's Pub &Grill North moves into Sal's location

Mother's Pub & Grill North opens on NW 39th Ave. This long time popular Midtown brew pub has opened a second location behind Northwest Grill in the building that housed Sal's Sports Bar. With a varied menu that includes chicken wings, burgers, sliders, subs, sandwiches the Pub also has an impressive list of PUB FAVORITES including Shepherd's Pie, Fish & Chips, Mac & Cheese and Wisconsin Rolls. Mother's claims to be Gainesville's best sports bar. "If a game or match is on TV we will find it for you."




Poke & Bowl lunch stop opens in Midtown

Poke & Bowl Station has opened in the Stadium Club in Midtown across from the St. Augustine Catholic Church. It also serves a complete POKE, or bowl menu of Asian delights including the Land & Sea Bowl ( $12.95), and the Rain of Fire Bowl (12.95) that includes spicy tuna, spicy salmon, red onion, corn, fresh jalapeno, cilantro, sirarcha aioli, sesame oil, cherry tomato, avocado, onion crisps, wasabi peas, and chili pepper. WHOOO!




Asian street faire available on SW 34th St.

SOHAO Street Fare Café is now open at 3945 SW 34th St. in the University Towne Center. With a varied menu of Asian favorites including Bowls and rice plates SOHAO also presents several unique entrees including steamed and pan fried buns, flat bread burgers with stewed pork, spicy cumin, and soya tofu. 14 Asian appetizers and chicken wings are also on the menu.




The Vietnamese Grille in the Stadium Club

The GLOB Master is embarrassed this PHO lunch stop has been buried in the back of the Stadium Club building unnoticed by me. Serving a complete menu of appetizers, Grilled Bowls, Bahn Mi sandwiches, and Vietnamese coffee. The Vietnamese Grille is open every day from 10:00 to 9:00 pm.
