Horse Driven: Ocala carriage ride

Horse Driven: Ocala carriage ride

Ocala horse country carriage ride is spectacular

By Kendall Crews, GLOB Correspondent

Editor's Note: At 12 years old Kendall has become horse driven and wants to share her equine experiences with GLOB readers.

Taking a carriage ride through the beautiful Ocala countryside is a great way to spend an afternoon.

032613CarriageGATEHorse Country Carriage Company & Tours is located at a Kimberden Farms. Kimberden Farms is also home of the University of Florida Hunt Seat Equestrian Team.

This horse farm is a beautifully landscaped 60 acre horse farm that is well worth a trip to Ocala to visit, and it is only a 35 minute drive from Gainesville.

Pulling up to the landscaped gated entrance at Kimberden Farms, I felt like I was entering a movie set. Driving through the gate and onto the property there was movement, things happening all around the grounds.

032613aCARRIAGE1stablesKimberden landscapers were taking care of the property, horses were being groomed, students were in the riding arena training, and people were walking their horses side by side  through the stables.

Pulling into the parking space I could see I was going to be greeted by the Kimberden's furry friends of the dog variety that live there. As soon as I stepped out of the car I was welcomed, or checked for treats by the doggies, I'm not sure which one it was but it did make me smile.

After all the hellos were over with the dogs, Kimie Caro our carriage tour guide was right there to show us around. Kimie is friendly, and full of energy.

032613KimieDUKEdoceBefore we headed out on the carriage ride Kimie walked us over to introduce us to Duke, left in photo,  and Doc, the horses that will be leading our ride today. They are famous horses, they have been in the movie, "Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides" and the country music video, "All Cried Out" with Kelly Parks.

I knew there was something about this place that a famous person would like, two of them have made it their home. These guys are really big, sweet horses who seem eager to get all dressed up and go to work.

After our hellos Kimie got the horses hooked up to the carriage using voice commands and Duke, and Doc listened to everything Kimie said. Once they were connected to the carriage we climbed aboard and off into North Florida horse country we went.

The sounds of the horses big hooves in sync together as we trotted off into the country was music to my ears. The sun was shining, a gentle breeze was moving across my face as we went down the path under awesome looking shade trees that left me speechless.

032613CarriageRIDEWe traveled through Ocala horse country with large, scenic farms on both sides of the road. Some farms are thoroughbred farms, and some have race tracks for training the horses. I am amazed at the size of the horse farms and the big homes on the properties.

Kimie stopped along the way and let us take pictures of the horses in the paddocks on each side of road. She was very knowledgeable about her surroundings, and the history of the horse farms.

I was surprised about how many interesting stories Kimie shared about the Ocala horse farm area.  John Travolta and his wife have taken a ride on Kimmie's carriage rides before. She told us about the home he bought in Ocala and how it has its own airport.

Kimie also shared interesting stories of how love, and the love of horses make great farms and sometimes the same love and horses destroy farms.

These were interesting stories, so I'm not going to spoil the stories for GLOBers. You have to take your own carriage ride to learn about that.

032613CarriageKENDALLridingBUGGYOn our way back to Kimberden Kimie let me climb into the carriage's drivers seat. It was so very exciting to drive a carriage and hold the reins to Duke and Doc.

Now I know why Kimie loves her job so much, she gets to hang out with great horses, and fun people in horse country all day.

Kimie was a really great tour guide. There are so many reasons you should enjoy your very own carriage ride experience.

032613CarriageCARRIAGEHorse Country Carriage Co. offers scenic farm tours for small private parties and large groups with lunch or dinner tours. They will even bring the horses to you for birthday parties or weddings. You could celebrate your anniversary, birthday, or a family get together. It doesn't even have to be a celebration of anything to enjoy this. Just going to horse country and enjoying the day by including a carriage ride in your horse country experience is reason enough for me to want to go back.  Follow this link for more Horse Country Carriage Co. information.
