Gator Dogs

No shoes, no service, here it's come as you are

By Bubba Scott

Editors Note: Farmer Bubba Scott is a container vegetable farmer. To help support the farm, he is a P.H.D., Professional Home Developer, AKA The House Doctor.

Talking about a great walk up lunch spot, Food On The Run spot, there's a hot dog, burger stand outside Home Depot called Gator Dogs on NW 53rd and US 441 that is the one place in town where you can shop till you drop and have a meal ready for you when you leave.

This place is the Gainesville work force's every day diner.

The food doesn't sit under grow lights like at a fast food palace, it's made when you place your order. You Just walk up, order, go in, and get what you need inside Home Depot and your meal is ready when you're ready to go back to the job site.

There's no need in changing your clothes on a hot day just to go to lunch. Instead of, no shoes, no shirt, not service, it's come as you are.

You may have just dropped out of an attic repair job, crawled out from under a house or been in the hot sun all morning. At the Gator Dog lunch stop, it doesn't matter to Matt and Stacy what you look like, or where you've been, what matters is that you get fed, and fed good.

Gator Dogs has daily specials and it changes from day to day. The philly cheese steak is Matt the owner's favorite. He's been using the same meat, bought from the same company, since he's beenthere. I guess that's why it tastes as good as it did 3 years ago when he opened this lunch stop

My favorite order is the jumbo dog and fries. Nothing like it. Especially when it's made fresh.

After I eat I want to feel full when I leave. Good food does that. And it's not just about the food, it's the people you're eating with that makes you feel at home.

To me, Gator Dog caters to to the idea 'when you're hungry, you eat'. Noon might be a good time for some to eat, but there's a whole bunch of us workers out there, who don't punch a time clock. We work for you. For us, noon could be at 10:30 in the morning or 2:00 in the afternoon. It's not the time of day when you can eat that matters. It's that you know a place that will feed you at that time of day.

I happened upon this 'box of miracles' one day when I was going to Subway...BTW haven't been back to Subway since ;)
The menu is so extensive & you can add anything you like to your order too, that eating here/there 3-4 times a week never gets boring. I'm always greeted with a smile and good conversation while my meal is being prepared. If i'm in a hurry all I do is call it in & it's ready when I get there...hot & fresh and if I haven't said this yet...DELICIOUS!!!
