SweetBerries Eatery & Frozen Custard

SweetBerries Eatery & Frozen Custard

How good is the Wisconsin Grilled Cheese Sandwich at SweetBerries Eatery and Frozen Custard? I enjoyed my first one last weekend for a Meatless Monday report.  Then I went back to SweetBerries this past week for another.  Do you want to hear the topper to this grilled cheese madness? Good friend Gary Miller, and I are going back AGAIN so I can introduce him to grilled cheese heaven. The SweetBerries Wisconsin Grilled Cheese can be a straightforward combination of cheddar, provolone, and Muenster cheese on grilled, thick-sliced sourdough bread. The thick slices of sourdough bread might make this sammie special. Toasted to a crisp crunch, the bread was a wonderful palette for the three cheeses to melt into all corners of my sandwich. As I enjoyed that first, unadorned WGC sandwich, SweetBerries co-owner, Jane Osmond, went into great detail describing how her husband likes his WGC with bacon, tomato, and avocado slices. Listening to that, I knew I had to return and have my own embellishments added in -- tomato, peppers, and onions. I CAN'T BELIEVE I FORGOT AVOCADOS SLICES! That's why I am going back this week.

MMCCsundaeThere is a link to the complete SweetBerries restaurant menu below, which has many meatless lunch choices.

How do you go to SBE & FC without ordering a  sundae? The flavor of the day was Cookies & Cream, which made a wonderful base of sugared delight for my candied pecans, chocolate syrup, and marshmallow cream. I ordered a small sundae, but the frozen treat was definitely big enough to share, and I managed to get it all down all by myself.

There are so many things to like about an excellent lunch at SweetBerries Eatery & Frozen Custard.

zzGLOBbullet A varied selection of sandwiches, salads, wraps. Hot dogs and in my opinion one of the best grilled cheese sammies in G'Ville. Please read about the Wisconsin Grilled cheese at the bottom of this page.

zzGLOBbullet Four different kinds of side items including a Broccoli Salad that should have its own SWEETBERRIES BROCCOLI SALAD DAY.

zzGLOBbullet Plus a very sophisticated craft beer and wine list that makes many of my friends say, "Good idea," when I suggest SweetBerries for lunch.

zzGLOBbullet A spacious, pet friendly. Shaded, patio where my friend Erica Corbett's dog Bodi took ownership of the SB metal puppy dog water bowl.

zzGLOBbullet DREAMsickleSCOOPDid you think I was going to not mention the SweetBerries Frozen Custard Flavor of the day? The flavor changes every day. It's a treat just to check out what my combo scoop will be for lunch. Can you say Dream Sickle GLOBer? My tennis ball size scoop of orange sherbert flavored custard was just the right size to eng a perfectly dreamy meatless Monday lunch

Jane and Janice Osmond run a very friendly, ready to please lunch stop decorated with Gainesville Fine Arts Association paintings and rendering that brighten the environment and also make for interesting mid-day 'object 'd contemplative material.'

I must admit I did fight temptation and while overlooking the Wisconsin Drilled Cheese Sammie. Gooey, melted Muenster cheese, tomatoes and toppings sounded like a very interesting "No Meat For You" kind of lunch. The SweetBerries Eatery & Frozen Custard Mushroom Melt is a mountain of mushrooms on top of Muenster cheese, sliced tomato, and a homemade garlic olive tapenade toasted on thick sliced whole wheat bread. There is a SweetBerries menu link at the bottom of this page.

I was talking to SweetBerries Co-Owner Janice Osmond about the Mushroom melt when at least three SB staffers overheard our conversation, rolled their eyes, and individually chimed in that the Mushroom Melt was their favorite sandwich.

For meatless lunch types any sandwich that includes a meat protien, Tempeh may be included in the sandwich rather than meat. There is no getting around it GLObers. Obviously SweetBerries is a veggie friendly lunch stop.

Fast casual lunch includes dark beer floats

By Mike Sanford, GLOB Editor

SberriesSFSweetBerries is closing in on their second year of business with an anniversary date in January.  It has been fun watching, and reporting on the old, empty Book Lovers' Cafe transformation into an inviting, contemporary lunch stop.

I call the SweetBerries Eatery and Frozen Custard lunch stop on the corner of NW 13th St and NW 5th Ave contemporary for many good reasons.

SweetBerries is popular in the Bradenton-Sarasota area for their frozen custard desserts and lunch time sandwich fare. Vanilla and chocolate frozen custard is available every day in addition to a frozen custard Flavor of the Day. This soft serve, fast casual approach to dessert screams out contemporary (I scream, you scream?).

SWEETbsCALENDARSweetBerries posts a Monthly Flavor of the Day calendar on the SweetBerries website. GLOBers can access this calendar by clicking on the SweetBerries ad that is rotating through all of the Gainesville Lunch Out Blog pages.

The SBE&FC Flavor of the Day when I visited the lunch stop was Toasted Coconut Almond Chip. If you are a coconut fan, this dessert is REALLY good.

The two-scoop serving cup is already the GLOB Master's perfect size dessert. For a little less than $6 you get two healthy scoops.  My choices are always chocolate and the Flavor of the Day. I have added either chocolate syrup, or caramel sauce to the top of my scoops to create a simply divine desert.

020613DiningSpeaking of contemporary, if you are lunching inside the SBE&FC (as opposed to out on the patio), they have all the modern (contemporary) conveniences including WIFI hookups for the digitally hungry. Did I say that SweetBerries is serving imported beer, domestic beer, and Guinness beer floats?

The GLOB Master is thinking the contemporary amenities at SweetBerries will create strong competition for those Starbucks table homesteaders enjoying $5 lattes.

There is ample seating in the newly redesigned patio area, and SweetBerries will feature live music outside on different occasions.

The SweetBerries lunch menu features soups, salads, wraps, classic sandwiches, and signature sandwiches. All sandwiches and salads can be made into combo lunch orders for a nominal charge.  A web link to the SweetBerries menu is available at the botom of this feature.

020413SwwtBsoupSandwichTOPPERMy lunch choice was the Grilled Chicken & Goat Cheese on grilled focaccia bread. The grilled chicken breast on my sandwich was marinated in a balsamic vinegar dressing, topped with roasted red peppers, sun dried tomatoes, red onion, goat cheese and arugula. This sandwich was created by the SweetBerries kitchen team, but I'm thinking they must have uncovered the recipe from the tomb of Dionysus the God of food & wine..

The sharp flavored cheese complemented the roasted chicken, and the roasted red peppers added a spicy kick to this flavor trifecta making the perfect LTTW (lunch-time-three-way).

When the GLOB Master first noticed that the everyday soup is Black Bean and Sausage, it beckoned him like a mirage in an Arabian desert.

The soup was thick and excellent.  It was not as tangy as I expected, however it possessed large pieces of sausage plentiful beans.

020513SberriesJANESweetBjanThanks to SweetBerries co-ownerJane Osmond, photo right, GLOB staffer, Lynn Dirk, was invited to participate in the SBE&FC beer float taste test to determine which of 3 dark beer candidates would be the choice for the SweetBerries Dark Beer floats.

Lynn and many members of the Osmond clan sampled 3 different dark beers, Guiness, Southern Tier's 2X Stout, and Murphy's Irish Stout, in a blind sampling to find out which beer would best complement the SweetBerrie's vanilla frozen custard in the SW beer float.

After much consideration between the five beer judges, it was revealed that Guiness was 020513LynnBEERthe unanimous winner. This was no surprise to Ms Dirk as she had already found a story on the world wide web declaring Guiness as the beer float beer of choice because "the malt in Guinness adds a nuttiness, while the sweetness of the ice cream complements the bitterness of the beer."

So you tell me, GLOBers, wifi, inside and outside dining, live music, extraordinary frozen custard, impressive lunch menu, BEER FLOATS satisfy the contemporary needs of your lunch palette?
