A'xin Sushi & Grill

A'xin Sushi & Grill

Style, substance create 5 star lunch experience

By Mike Sanford, GLOB Editor

I do believe that a superior lunch is more than just a five-star special entrée with two sides. For instance, I am a real sucker for presentation.

A'xin Sushi & Grill, fulfills the GLOB Master's requirements for an excellent lunch experience. The visual style of this Japanese sushi bar and grill sends you to another time and place as soon as you enter the front door of this Shoppes of Williston restaurant (corner of Williston Rd. and SW 34th St).

My daughter was in town and she is a MahzuSFbig sushi fan. Gainesville Lunch Out Blog Content Editor Lynn Dirk, my son Bob, and my new granddaughter Penelope joined Jana and me for lunch. We were excited about trying many different entrees from the A'xin menu. There is a complete Mahzu menu at the restaurant link below.

Along with an extensive list of Sushi rolls and combination platters of sushi and sashimi, A'xin also had a varied list of Bento box lunch entrees plus a varied list of teriyaki and tempura lunch entrees.

Since I knew that Jana and Lynn would dive into the sushi portion of the menu, and Bob was eyeing a Bento box, I quickly decided on the Shrimp Teriyaki Kitchen Lunch Entrée, which included udon noodles, fried rice, and a stir fried medley of broccoli, onions and carrots.

MahzuSUSHImikeThe shrimp were very good. Sauteed to just tender, they had a distinct flavor that reminded me of being at the beach and enjoying fresh seafood. The vegetable medley was excellently cooked in an Asian al dente way and these beautifully presented veggies looked very dramatic on my plate and were very tasty as well. Remember the word dramatic.

Bob opted for the Bento box of chicken, sushi roll, fire shrimp and fried rice. Bob remarked how tender the chicken was, and his shrimp were fried to perfection.

I got mine and Bob's lunch out of the way because the sushi entrees that Jana and Lynn enjoyed were not only dramatically presented, but they also got enough food lunch to feed all of us.

MahzuSUSHIsticksJana ordered the "Any 3 Roll" lunch special and selected fish, photo at top of feature. What a spectacularly dramatic presentation of rice and raw fish.

Lynn ordered the Any Two Roll Lunch Special and selected the Veggie Roll (scallion, asparagus, avocado) and a Chicken Tempura Roll. The dish came with a beautiful blue lit vase MahzuSUSHIflowerwith long strands of beet cascading out of it around an edible fuschia-colored flower. That would win the blue ribbon for presentation this week and no doubt for the year.

The rolls also tasted great. The chicken tempura was lightly crispy with panko breading. The veggie roll was a great combination of flavors – without cream cheese! That was a special surprise as it seems most sushi rolls, especially veggie ones, seem to have cream cheese and Lynn is not a cream cheese fan.

MahzuSUSHIchefKyle the A'xin Sushi Chef and owner (right) and Ophelia our server were very attentive and made our lunch visit very enjoyable.

The quiet of the dining room combined with the tasteful yet minimal décor made for a very relaxing mid-day interlude while we watched Gainesville burn to a glaringly toast high temperature through a glass that shielded us from the outside world.

This was a wonderful, fun diversion from the busy world going on this noon time Monday afternoon. I thought about just asking if we could stay until the late afternoon rains came.

Dark clouds, wind, rain, white plates, rice, artful cuisine. Now I'm talking lunch drama here.

It is easy to say style and substance came together in this contemporary restaurant to create a perfect Asian lunch.
