Adam's Rib Co.

ARC continues to be a great lunch stop with two smart meat eating lunch specials. The bright, way larger, and very friendly 'gator' environ males for an enthusiastic, hungry appetite. This is one of those lunch stops where you are making a mistake not checking their lunch Daily Special board. The Daily special was two burger sliders and a side for $5.99. Now that's a smart idea GLOBers. The GLOB Master doesn't have a problem shoving food in his mouth, so I appreciate lunch stops, service, entrees that are smaller portioned by design so I can feel good about cleaning my plate. It might be psychological at times but sitting at the ARC lunch counter I was feeling very good about enjoying TWO hamburgers perfectly cooked and appointed with ketchup, crispy lettuce and tomato. The toasted bun added yet another pleasing taste contribution to a very good lunch. It's hard for me not to automatically choose French fries with my hamburger, however the Adams Rib sides of green beans, corn, macaroni and cheese, BBQ baked beans, potato salad, cole slaw, collard greens, Seasoned French fries, black eyed peas are all delicious. I'm going back to Adam's Rib Co. soon just to see what the Daily Special might be.

Bar-B-Que, BBQ, pork, ribs brisket, chopped, chicken, burnt ends, Memphis, Texas, Florida, North Carolina, Korean, mustard base, smoked . . .

Did I missed a category?

AR13thstSF2016Adam's Rib Company on NW 13th St. has become one of Gainesville's lunch time favorite 'Que joints for folks serious about a healthy serving of their protein cooked over open flame red meat protein.

And I can't blame them.

The Rib Company serves up a different lunch special every day that would make any judicious lover of red meat slathered in one of their many sauces to stand up and take notice.

AR2ribs

There are some serious eating food lovers in this small lunch stop. However the customers seem to move in and out of this diner atmosphere on a relatively speedy basis. You can thank the wait staff for that efficiency.

There are no frills at Adam's Rib Company. Excellent BBQed lunch fare is served to you with customer friendly attitude from people that understand you're on a lunch break and you don't have any time to dilly-dally.

So, BTW, have you ever dilly-dallied over lunch . . . ? !

I don't know who invented the chopped pork BBQ sandwich on texas toast so I am publicly thanking them here for what I call pure sandwich nirvana. Crispy toasted bread, tangy sauce with a little heat smothering a man size serving of deliciously smoked, chopped, tasty morsels of 'the other white meat'.

I've asked the friendly staffers behind the Adams Rib Company Counter to give me a call the next time the pork,Texas toast sandwich makes the ARC today's special board.

I'm guessing they have been busy doing other things . . . I haven't received the first phone call.

The GLOB counts fourteen restaurants in our Urban Glob making BBQ their speciality. Write the GLOB a comment and let us know what makes your favorite BBQ lunch spot special?

A.R.'s two-rib special w/fries and greens: PERFECT!

Just like that -- it was a little cooler at lunch time. The warm sun shining on my back as I crossed 13th St. in front of Adam's Rib made me think of those kitties you see curled up in windows absorbing vitamin D. I was in an absorption mode, but I was thinking of a stick-to-your-ribs lunch special from this 13th St. BBQ joint. Have you tried the 2-rib, 1-side-order $5.99 Adam's Rib Lunch Special? OK, I admit I ordered a second side of what could be the best collard greens in Hogtown. I'm a big guy, and that is a lot of food I absorbed. Speaking of absorbing, the Texas toast is perfect for absorbing pot liquor leftovers in the bottom of the greens container.  BTW, I just read that pot liquor is a heart healthy brew, and that makes this old Southern, green nectar of the gods a win/win lunch addition. Now THAT'S good news I can use.

ROAD TRIP: Pearl Country Store BBQ

Comments, BBQ compels GLOB to Micanopy

By Bubba Scott, GLOB Correspondent

After receiving several comments about how good the barbecue is at Pearl Country Store and Barbecue in Micanopy on US 441, GLOB Editor Mike Sanford and I decided to visit Micanopy and see for ourselves how good this 'cued meat really is.

Our journey took us to Pearl's in front of a looming rain storm as we discussed what exactly makes good BBQ. I explained to Mike it's plain and simple: Good BBQ is meat cooked on an open pit without the sauce. If you have to add sauce to make it moist or kill the taste, it's not BBQ.

PearlesDiningPearl's brings back memories of country stores from the last generation. The dining area in this 'one stop buys everything' store is in the back of the shopping area with neat and tidy tables. There is also a great looking wooden lunch counter that allows excellent conversation on any topic you want to bring up with anyone who will listen. We made the conversation about how a seasoned pit master creates BBQ.

Of course we chose the counter, which gives a great view of food in motion. Prep Cook, Pit Boss Lee White was working on the next day's cooking, which starts for him around 4:00 in the morning. Pit Bull (not the dog) Sharon Hope, the cook, was busy preparing the lunch items for the day's meals, and Sharon the Pit Server made sure we were happy with our lunch.

GLOBers are correct--this is excellent barbecue.

I wanted to give their 'cue a fair assessment so I asked for a sample of what they have for lunch everyday. I'm feeling very smart because I was rewarded with an amazing array of tasty 'cue meat products.

PsRIBS

Pearl's served me up some excellent tender, moist, and very tasty ribs. On the side of the ribs I found a nice surprise in the pulled chicken and very good beef brisket piled high begging for barbecue sauce to join their party.

While enjoying my lunch I noticed Sharon putting a now ready-to-eat brisket into the cooler for later. I should've taken that home with me. Pit Boss Lee said Pearl's would be happy to cook your 'cue meat for you, along with their daily meat products, for a small fee.

PearlsBeansExcellent baked beans and creamy, sharp flavored mac 'n cheese rounded out a pefect barbecue lunch. A very special thank you to Janet Tibbits (photo at top), our most knowledgeable server with a very friendly demeanor.

THIS ROAD TRIP WAS AN EXCELLENT IDEA!

Pearl's has been in business since 2001 and is owned by David and Peggy Carr. If you want to experience good BBQ in a country setting, Pearl Country Store and Barbecue is the place to go. This is real pit BBQ. Not only does Pearl's have great BBQ, but also the atmosphere of a country store and friendly service makes a repeat trip a must.

See you there!

The Pluses and Minuses of Pearl's Country Store and BBQ:

Pearl's Country Store and BBQ + indicators: Authentic, home style, very tasty BBQ in a good 'ol country store setting.

Pearl's Country Store and BBQ - indicators: none noted. I'm going back!

Ward's Supermarket

Ward's BBQ passes Farmer Bubba's test

FOLLOW THIS LINK to another GLOB Ward's Supermarket feature

By Bubba Scott, GLOB Correspondent

Editors Note: Farmer Bubba Scott is a container vegetable farmer. To help support the farm, he is a P.H.D., Professional Home Developer, AKA The House Doctor.

WardsGROCERYGoing through this web site (the GLOB) does one thing to me. It makes me hungry. Visiting with GLOB Editor Mike Sanford today, we started talking about BBQ and who has the best. With a name like Bubba and raised in Texas, I grew up on good BBQ. So, after leaving Mike's house my thoughts were on which BBQ place I'd try. I chose Ward's Supermarket.

When you walk in the door or Ward's Supermarket, you know what they sell. Fresh produce. It's all about the smell. However, I've never tried their BBQ. I've seen that big pit out front, but never tried what gets cooked in it. The adventure was on. I picked up some veggies and headed for the meat. The pit wasn't going, but they had a great variety of meat wrapped up on the shelf. BBQ tastes best right off the pit, so this was going to be a good test on taste.

After getting clearance from Ward's pit boss, Derrik, to take a couple of pictures, I found out he's been BBQ'ing for two years. That was good enough for me. Being a little hungry, I decided to pick up a few things for the ride home.

BBQchicken

My selection was one whole Brown Sugar BBQ Chicken, Pulled Chicken, Homemade Smoked Sausage, photo at top of fature, and a couple of sides, Matt's Mac and Cheese and Potato Salad. I'm one who likes to taste the meat and not the sauce. I don't like dried out meat or meat that's been boiled, frozen, then BBQ'd the next day. BBQ should have a great pit taste. You can add the sauce later.

WardsPotatoSalad

Well I have to say, this was like good ole Texas BBQ. The potato salad and mac and cheese tasted homemade. I do a lot of cooking and eat out very little, but when I do, I want the food to taste the way I would cook it or better.

WARDSMacCheese

So, Ward's BBQ get's a five star rating from Farmer Bubba. This 'que was wrapped up not right off the pit. The sausage was the best I've ever eat'n. It didn't make it to the first red light. The brown sugar chicken was moist with a real pit taste, the pulled chicken had a great ratio of chicken to BBQ sauce. As for the sides, they tasted homemade. The only thing missing in this BBQ dinner was a container of sliced sweet onions and dill pickles. Great cook'n Derrik and Ward's. Not only do you have a great store, you're staff is the friendliest around.

Remember to shop at Ward's and support the farmer.
